  19. Windows Users - Navigational Software
  20. -------------------------------------

  22. Every attempt has been made to provide MPC compatible content,
  23. both in images (BMP format) and sound (WAV format).  A
  24. Windows navigational program can be found in the root
  25. directory of the disc.  You may install part of or all of the software 
  26. to the hard drive by using the SETUP.EXE program, through Window's File 
  27. Manager. The choice is yours.  Installing everything to the hard disk 
  28. provides better performance, however, it will add about 1.5 MB of files 
  29. to your hard drive. Buttons in the book may be used with a mouse, or with 
  30. the TAB (which moves around the app) and Enter key (to select a 
  31. highlighted button).

  33. Standard Windows style help is available, just press the button labeled
  34. "?" on the button bar.
  35.  
  36. Keep in mind the following requirements for Windows users:
  37.  
  38. 1.  You must have Windows version 3.1 or version 3.0 with the 
  39. multi-media extensions.  Windows 3.1 or later is recommended.
  40.  
  41. 2.  You must have an MPC compatible sound card to use the sound. Boards
  42. from Creative Labs (the SoundBlaster Pro), Media Vision (Pro Audio 
  43. Spectrum), and many other vendors have been tested for compatibility with
  44. this product.
  45.  
  46. 3.  Pictures work best with the 256 color 640 x 480 Windows driver.
  47. These are available direct from the video board manufacturer.  Aris
  48. does not supply these.  You must have at least 512K of video RAM for this 
  49. feature to work.
  50.  
  51. 4.  If the sound breaks up, try to increase the buffering done by Windows.
  52. To do this, go to the Main Window, select Control Panels, then select 
  53. Drivers.  Double click on the MCI Sound selection and move the slider to
  54. 9 seconds of buffering.  If this doesn't entirely solve the problem,
  55. you may need to increase the memory buffering in the MSCDEX statement in
  56. your AUTOEXEC.BAT (the /m: command).  Try increasing it to 16 or 20.

  60. There are 100 high quality images and 100 sound tracks stored on
  61. this disc.  Images are stored in several formats for your
  62. convenience:
  63.  
  64. 1.  24-bit TIF, in 640 x 480 format, for high resolution paint 
  65. programs and desktop publishing, in the TIFF directory. Users with 
  66. Hi-Color cards may view these true color images with programs capable 
  67. of 24-bit image display.
  68.  
  69. 2.  8-bit PCX, 640 x 480 format, for most DOS paint programs, in the
  70. PCX directory.
  71.  
  72. 3.  8-bit BMP, 640 x 480 format, for compatibility with Windows, in
  73. the BMPLARGE directory.
  74.  
  75. 4.  8-bit BMP, 320 x 240 format, for high speed viewing, in the 
  76. BMPSMALL directory.

  78. Audio is 22 Khz, 8-bit, stored as follows:

  80. 1.  WAV format in the WAVE directory, for MPC compatibility.
  81.  
  82. 2.  VOC format in the SNDBLAST directory, for compatibility with
  83. Sound Blaster audio cards.

  88. If you have Windows 3.1 or 3.0 with multi-media extensions, we
  89. recommend use of our Windows navigation system.  Details for use of
  90. this software follow this section.

  92. To start using this disc, type "VALOHA" at the CD-ROM drive's
  93. DOS prompt.  Unfortunately, low resolution versions of each picture
  94. are not available on this disc.  You will need a Sound Blaster card 
  95. or 100% compatible to hear the music.

  121. The disc you have in your CD-ROM drive contains two complete
  122. versions of World View (tm), one for Macintosh, the other for
  123. PC.  Your CD-ROM driver is smart enough to figure out which one
  124. you view, so sit back and enjoy.

  127. You may use the IMAGE ALCHEMY shareware program for two weeks
  128. without registering the software and paying the fee.  Please
  129. note, this program works well on all 640 x 480 or smaller
  130. images.  It offers many fine capabilities, such as
  131. conversion between many different formats, including Mac and PC,
  132. and it should find a home in your imaging utilities directories.
  133. The registered version will handle images larger than 640 x 480.
  134.  
  135. A navigational HyperPAD application called "VALOHA" has been
  136. included to help find your way through the files.  The TAB key
  137. moves through the fields, ENTER selects.  The mouse is also
  138. supported.  Best display quality is obtained with Super VGA
  139. video boards with 512K of video memory.  Most mainstream video boards
  140. are supported, but there are new ones every day.  The best solution
  141. to this problem is to use our Windows version.  Sound may be played if
  142. you have a Sound Blaster or compatible card -- just select the Sound 
  143. button in the HyperPAD interface.  Remember, the PC was not designed as a
  144. multi-media machine, and so this interface is not as "robust" as
  145. we would prefer.
  146.  
  147. Audio is stored in the WAVE directory in Microsoft's WAV
  148. format, as well as in VOC format in the SNDBLAST directory.
  149. This sound has been tested with MPC compatible sound boards and
  150. is of a quality high enough (22 Khz, mono) for multi-media
  151. presentations.  You must have an MPC compatible sound board with
  152. speaker or headphone to hear the WAV files.  The Mediavision Pro
  153. Spectrum and the Sound Blaster Professional sound boards were
  154. used in the development of this product.  They were easy to
  155. install and both worked well.

  157. Tech Tips
  158. ---------
  159.  
  160. 1.  Try installing a VESA driver, if you have a 512K VGA card and Image
  161. Alchemy doesn't recognize your video board. These usually come on a 
  162. floppy diskette supplied by the manufacturer.

  164. 2.  Use the LOWRES program if you don't have 512K of video memory.
  165.  
  166. 3.  Use our Windows interface.  It's really much nicer!
